The least you should know:
The Marlins, for the second straight game did not amount to much offense. They had 4 hits this afternoon and looked very uninspired throughout.
- Mark Buehrle started for the fish. He looked really strong going 6 innings of two run ball while striking out 5.
- Johnny Cueto just happened to be that much better. Cueto, the new ace of the
Reds starting rotation pitched 7 shutout innings and keeping the Marlins offense quiet all afternoon. Aroldis Chapman and Sean Marshall each combined for two more shutout innings thereafter. - As mentioned, the offense was no where to be seen. Gaby Sanchez delivered the biggest pop of the day for the Marlins driving a double to straight away center field. Obviously, he failed to score in the inning.
- Jay Bruce knocked a home run to center field this afternoon off Edward Mujica in the 8th inning. According to measurements, the ball traveled 442 feet. It was an absolute bomb hitting the area above the black batter’s eye in center. Mujica gave up two runs this afternoon. Not his best outing.
The Marlins will have a much needed off day tomorrow and will resume play on Saturday. Ricky Nolasco will face off against newly acquired Mat Latos for the Reds. Game time is 7:10 PM.
OK. Game one is over. And it was pretty much a disaster of an opener for most of it. But all the pomp and jitters of opening a new stadium in a new city with new fans and half a team of new players should have dissipated by the end of it. Now, as we get on the road, it’s time to really get into the season. Yeah, we’re 0-1. You know what else? The team that beat us won the World Series last season. I know they’re without Pujols now, but honestly, Pujols wasn’t the reason they won that championship. That’s still a good baseball team. Continue reading →

Mark Buehrle (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start the opener this afternoon. This will mark the first start for Buehrle since coming over from the White Sox this off season. Buehrle has thrown 11 straight 200 inning seasons. Noteworthy: He is 2-0 with a 0.60 era against the Reds all-time.
Johnny Cueto (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for the Reds this afternoon. It will be his first opening day start of his young career. Last season he was limited to 156 innings pitched due to arms issues, yet compiling a 2.31 era in 24 starts.
Well, the much anticipated inaugural home opener did not go as planned, but luckily there
are 161 more games left! I feel everyone was a little too excited and tried to make everything perfect, rather then let the game come to them.
Starting from the first pitch, when Josh Johnson threw a 93 MPH heater in for strike one. I was expecting him to reach back and throw a 98 MPH laser in their. For giving up 10 hits, J.J’s night could have been a lot worse. There’s no doubt in my mind he will bounce back and be totally sharp in his next outing.
Yes, Hanley Ramirez should have dived or made a sliding play on that grounder between short and third. Yes, he should have thrown 34 year old Rafael Furcal out on his bunt attempt. Yes, he was swinging out of his shoes when he chopped out to third. Hanley is going to have issues with his change to third base. He wasn’t a stellar shortstop to begin with and third base isn’t called the hot corner for no reason. At the end of the day, we are going to have to deal with his defense to reap the rewards of the monster offensive season I think he is poised for.
Giancarlo Stanton barely missed two bombs. Boy do I get excited every time the ball jumps off his bat. If you have never seen him take a BP session, you are truly missing out.
Now that a real game has finally been played in Marlins Park, some of the new ballpark celebrations can die down, and they can just focus on playing. Aside from not getting a win, it was a great night for the franchise. On to Cincinnati..

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has spent his brief time here fine tuning his new club in spring training. With opening night a few hours away, he spent a few moments with reporters and Marlins beat writers at Marlins Park this afternoon. Some of his comments that are making the news wires:
Tonight, the Miami Marlins will face St. Louis Cardinals at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida. It will mark an historic first night for the revamped Marlins. There is a lot of excitement in the air. Let’s go Fish!
Josh Johnson will face Kyle Lohse. Game time is at 7pm and live television coverage will be presented by ESPN.

The Marlins will face off against the Nationals and Twins this afternoon in a split squad match up. Game time is set for 1:05 PM for both games. If you would like to check out the lineups for both games, including the game tomorrow against the cardinals, check out Joe Frisaro on Twitter:
According to Marlins beat writer Joe Frisaro, Giancarlo Stanton has a knee issue that will join his already sore wrist. He had doctors examine the undisclosed knee this afternoon in Jupiter. According to Ozzie Guillen, it isn’t serious:
“Giancarlo has a little soreness in his knees, he’s being tested right now. It’s a lot better. I talked to the doctor today. It’s not a big deal. I expect him to start running and doing something in the next couple of days, and then we go from there.”
Logan Morrison and Greg Dobbs also did not play today. Logan has some knee issues of his own and Greg Dobbs will sit a week with a hamstring problem.
Note: Marlins Prospect Ramon Benjamin will also undergo season ending surgery after tearing his labrum this spring. The procedure, which was performed by the legendary Dr. James Andrews in Florida, will sideline Ramon until 2013. By then, he is slated to start at AA Jacksonville.
Update: An MRI has revealed that Giancarlo has some left knee inflammation according to David Neal of the Miami Herald. He will sit out a week and then hopefully return without any issues. As you know, he was also hit on the wrist by a pitch earlier in the week. So in addition to the knee inflammation, he also has some wrist soreness.
Stanton is pretty banged up right now. Hopefully when the season starts he’ll be ready to go.
After a rain delay early on, the Marlins (7-3) rallied from 1-0 down to beat the Mets (3-8) by a score of 3-1 at Roger Dean Stadium this afternoon.

The Least You Should Know
- Josh Johnson started for the fish today. He went 3 innings giving up one run on five hits and striking two before the rain delay forced him out of the game.
- Jose Reyes faced his old team this afternoon. He went 0-1 before being forced out of the game as well due to the weather. Some quotes regarding his teammate Josh Johnson, his current living arrangement and how he feels about leaving New York check out Tim Reynolds’ article in the Miami Herald.
- After Johnson left the game, the Marlins bullpen combined for six shutouts innings from Heath Bell, Mike Dunn, Brad Hand and J.D Martin. Hand managed to get the victory throwing two scoreless frames.
- Marlins prospect Kevin Mattison delivered the only run batted in for the Marlins this afternoon singling home Chris Coghlan, who by the way had two hits in the game raising his spring average to .333.
All in all, toss up another win for the Marlins this spring. I hate these rain delays but hey, what are you going to do about it. Luckily, the Marlins won’t encounter any of those in their new retractable roof, state of the art ball park. So until then, we’ll just have to tough out some of these rain delays.
The Marlins will face off against the Cardinals in Jupiter tomorrow. Mark Buehrle will face off against Jake Westbrook. Game time is set for 1:05 pm.
