Ozzie Guillen wraps up his long day (was at both games), in dramatic fashion!
Top prospect Christian Yelich tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th, only to have his spotlight stolen by Terry Tiffee as he delivered the game winning walk off single in the following at bat. What a way to break in the new ballpark!
The least you should know:
- Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run opposite field home run in the bottom of the 4th inning off Canes pitcher Alex Fernandez, son of former Marlins pitcher (same name). Hanley has been crushing the ball since the first practice this spring! He is poised for a HUGE bounce back season.
- In his Marlins debut, Mark Buehrle tossed 3 innings. Giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 K’s. He threw 27 of his 35 pitches for strikes.
- UM freshman Andrew Suarez, started for the Canes and threw 3 shutout innings, while only allowing 2 hits and walking none. Suarez a 9th round pick of the Blue Jays in this past seasons draft, showed his potential of being a high round pick in the oncoming years.
- Elih Villanueva, Ryan Webb, Edward Mujica, Steve Cishek, and Robert Ray combined for 6 innings of relief, while giving up 1 earned run and striking out 9 batters.
Post Game Thoughts:
UM came out and fought hard tonight, leaving with a very tough loss. I know wins and losses are both meaningless in spring training, but this one still feels great!
For me, my favorite part of spring training has always been the joy in being able to catch a live glimpse of prospects such as Christian Yelich (2-3) and Kevin Mattison (1-2). They certainly did not disappoint tonight.
Tomorrow, the Marlins take on the Mets @1:05 PM at Roger Dean Stadium. As well as another split squad night game against FIU at Marlins Park. Game time is set for 7:10 PM for the nightcap.
